Just 5km outside Letterkenny are the restored Corn & Flax Mills at Newmills. There are two separate water-driven mills located at this site, one for grinding oats and barley and the other for extracting the fibres from the flax plant for use in the linen industry. The Corn Mill is powered by one of the largest working water wheels in Ireland, which was manufactured in Strabane, Co. Tyrone in 1867. Visitors to the site can see first-hand the industrial and agricultural methods of a bygone era.
